Us in Detail

Manly Warringah Pipe Band was inaugurated on the 9th February 1949. We are primarily a social band who welcome members wishing to keep Scottish traditional music alive while at the same time enjoying the camaraderie and friendship of people with the same interests.

The band wears the Military Gordon tartan kilt and we have a number of different uniforms depending on the season and occasion. For the more formal events we wear “full dress” with feather bonnets, plaids, green jackets, belts and dirks – an impressive sight!!. For the hot Sydney summer we don our pith helmets & discard the jacket. Over the years we have played for many and varied events around Sydney, the State and even overseas. From local Surf Life Saving Club Carnivals to Manly Corso appearances, Highland Gatherings around NSW, weddings, the annual ANZAC March in the city, ANZAC Services for RSL Clubs, formal dinners, rugby matches and school/church fetes. We take pride in what we do and the competitions we participate throughout each year assists in the performance that we give.

We have an active Management Committee that looks after publicity, correspondence, finance, social events and the general day-to-day running of the band.

Our Pipe Major Nick Roelvink runs the musical side of things while the Drum Major ,Barry Nicholas leads the band and makes sure our drill is up to scratch.

In the year 2000 we undertook to review and rewrite our somewhat outdated Constitution and Band Rules and we feel we now have a modern and “with it” organisation. The aim of the exercise was to make the band attractive to people from all walks of life and to make sure we conform to all relevant human rights issues and Australian laws - we have achieved that. The addition of two Band Member Representatives in the Committee allows everyone to have a voice and some input into the running of the band. Members of Manly Warringah Pipe Band include pipers, drummers, dancers and flag bearers – something to suit everyone. We encourage “multi-tasking” for those members with the skills and interest to learn more than one role. This is something not traditionally done in Pipe Bands. In 1999 the band celebrated it’s 50th birthday. We recognise the need to move with the times and provide a balance between training and socialising and because of this you can expect Manly Warringah Pipe Band to be here for many years to come.
